The AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), initially formed by BlackRock, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), Microsoft, and MGX, has expanded its coalition to include NVIDIA, xAI, GE Vernova, and NextEra Energy. The partnership aims to mobilize up to US$100 billion in investments to develop next-generation AI data centers and energy infrastructure, addressing the growing demand for AI-ready facilities and sustainable power solutions.

“AI is not just an industry of the future, it underpins the future,” says Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman, MGX. “As we welcome new partners to the AI Infrastructure Partnership, we will accelerate innovation and technological breakthroughs to achieve transformational productivity gains across the global economy.”

The rapid expansion of AI technologies has created unprecedented demand for advanced data centers and energy infrastructure. AI applications require massive computational power, which in turn necessitates scalable, energy-efficient data centers and reliable power solutions. A recent Goldman Sachs Research forecasts that demand from data centers will increase 50% by 2027 and by as much as 165% by the end of the decade (compared with 2023).

The AIP, launched in September 2024, was established to address this need by pooling expertise and capital from leading technology, infrastructure, and energy companies. The inclusion of NVIDIA and xAI brings cutting-edge AI and accelerated computing capabilities to the partnership, while GE Vernova and NextEra Energy contribute critical energy solutions to power AI infrastructure sustainably.

The AIP aims to unlock US$30 billion in initial capital from investors, asset owners, and corporations, potentially mobilizing up to US$100 billion when including debt financing. These investments will primarily target the United States, OECD countries, and US partner nations, focusing on the development of next-generation AI data centers and energy infrastructure. The partnership’s open-architecture platform is designed to foster collaboration among a diverse range of stakeholders, ensuring scalability and inclusivity.

NVIDIA’s role as a technical advisor will be critical in guiding the deployment of AI factories — specialized data centers optimized for AI workloads. These facilities will leverage NVIDIA’s full-stack AI infrastructure to convert vast amounts of data into actionable intelligence, driving innovation across industries, reports Business Wire. Meanwhile, xAI’s participation reinforces the partnership’s commitment to advancing AI research and development.

GE Vernova and NextEra Energy will collaborate with AIP to deliver high-efficiency energy solutions, including renewables, battery storage, and gas-fired and nuclear generation. This “all-of-the-above” approach aims to meet the unprecedented energy demands of AI infrastructure while reducing emissions. To realize the full potential of AI, companies must develop and support the energy infrastructure and data centers that will fuel this technology, says John Ketchum, Chairman and CEO, NextEra Energy.

The partnership’s emphasis on sustainability aligns with global efforts to decarbonize the technology sector. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers and transmission networks account for nearly 1% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. By integrating innovative energy solutions, AIP aims to mitigate the environmental impact of AI infrastructure while supporting its rapid growth.
