OpenAI breaks into the realm of digital assistants, looking to differentiate itself by leveraging Machine Learning technology. This move is in response to the ongoing technological competition among industry giants like Google and Amazon, who are actively capitalizing on advances in Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing. OpenAI aims to stand out by offering an all-encompassing virtual assistant that seamlessly integrates both text-based and voice-based interactions, making it a versatile and user-friendly tool capable of learning based on past interactions.

While ChatGPT's voice interface may resemble Google’s and Amazon's virtual assistants, there are significant differences that set them apart. For instance, ChatGPT's virtual assistant will rely heavily on an expansive language model, enabling it to generate language by analyzing vast amounts of textual data from various sources on the internet. Moreover, ChatGPT's assistant will have the capacity to self-correct and learn from past mispronunciations or linguistic misunderstandings, a capability that will distinguish it from other virtual assistants lacking such adaptability.

OpenAI's digital assistant marks a significant step forward in leveraging AI to facilitate natural and intuitive interactions, enabling users to leverage images and the spoken word. For instance, users will be able to upload a photo of the contents of their refrigerator and inquire about possible recipes based on the available ingredients. OpenAI’s new capabilities also stand to enhance students’ learning processes by providing possible solutions to math problems that include words, numbers and diagrams through camera accessibility.

The company announced that the updated version of the chatbot will be gradually made available to all subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, currently priced at US$20 per month. However, the bot's voice response feature will be exclusively accessible on iPhones, iPads and Android devices. However, OpenAI’s researchers are cautious about releasing its new tool, concerned that it can be exploited as a facial recognition service, potentially enabling extensive and unlawful surveillance practices.

Other malicious applications include ChatGPT’s linguistic capabilities in vishing cybersecurity attacks, which have proliferated following apparent success from targeted Mexico and the greater Latin American region. At the same time, if OpenAI is not careful to safeguard privacy laws, it could face litigation charges similar to the ones brought to Amazon by the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice, which resulted in a US$30 million fine.
