Amazon Shares Decarbonization Strategies
Amazon launched the Sustainability Exchange, a new initiative that focuses on disclosing previously proprietary guidance and information on decarbonizing operations. This platform aims to help other companies progress toward net-zero emissions.
Over the past decade, Amazon has developed various methodologies and tools to tackle climate change. The company has introduced more than 24,000 electric delivery vehicles globally, achieved LEED Platinum Certification for its HQ2 headquarters, co-invented recycling technology for mixed polyester plastics, and matched all electricity used across its global operations with 100% renewable energy in 2023.
Amazon’s Sustainability Exchange offers resources in seven key areas: Buildings, Carbon Neutralization, Carbon-Free Energy, Human Rights, Transportation, Waste and Circularity, and Water Stewardship. The platform targets businesses of all sizes and industries, aiming to empower them to decarbonize and develop sustainable operations. It will be updated over time to include new content and resources to meet the varying needs of suppliers.
Amazon will prioritize working with suppliers committed to decarbonization. It has identified the highest-emitting suppliers supporting its operations, who collectively contribute over 50% of Amazon’s Scope 3 emissions. These suppliers are expected to provide decarbonization plans and demonstrate progress. Additionally, Amazon invited suppliers to join The Climate Pledge, a business community addressing climate challenges. The Pledge has over 500 signatories in 45 countries. Members gain access to events, projects, and experts in climate, policy, and sustainability science.
