US Embassy in Mexico Flags Shein, Temu Apps for Data Concerns
The US Embassy in Mexico has urged users to delete apps such as Shein, Temu, AliExpress, and Alibaba, citing data security concerns and their impact on local industries.
In a video shared by the embassy, Andrés Díaz Bedolla, founder, Yumari platform, called on consumers to remove these applications from their devices. He pointed to ongoing legal cases in the United States regarding data collection practices and emphasized the financial losses these platforms reportedly incur per transaction to undermine competition.
“These platforms are willing to lose US$30 per transaction in Latin America with the aim of disrupting and eliminating local industries that could compete with them,” Díaz Bedolla stated.
The embassy echoed this warning in a social media post, claiming that “China and low-cost platforms like Shein, Temu, AliExpress, and Alibaba are destroying Mexican industries and stealing your data.”
Díaz Bedolla, a former participant in the US Department of State’s Young Leaders of the Americas program, framed the issue as a threat to economic growth and national development.
The statement comes amid growing international scrutiny of Chinese e-commerce platforms over data privacy concerns and competitive trade practices.
