Akron Earmarks Investment in Jalisco for 2025
Akron announced plans to invest between US$100 and US$150 million in the construction of a power plant in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, with the goal of starting operations by 2025. This initiative aims to tap into a potential market of 25 million people in the region, marking Akron's entry into the Mexican electricity market.
Santiago Martínez, Chairman, Akron, stated that the company aims to diversify its energy portfolio by including both fossil fuels and renewable energy sources to ensure the economic viability and profitability of its projects. He also highlighted the opportunities available in the national electricity market, where CFE currently supplies 54% of the energy, leaving 46% for the private sector.
As part of its expansion strategy, Akron is considering the installation of electric vehicle charging stations and, depending on potential regulatory reforms, may explore energy commercialization, transmission, and distribution in Mexico.
Akron continues to expand in other sectors. The company is currently drilling two oil wells in southern Texas and plans to open 14 new service stations across various Mexican states, bringing its total number of gas stations in the country to 79. In 2024, Akron has invested US$100 million in its Texas operations.
