PEMEX Signals Shift Toward Renewables in New Organic Statute
In its recently released Organic Statute, PEMEX reaffirmed its commitment to playing an active role in Mexico’s energy transition by expanding into new energy sources, including renewables, hydrogen, and geoenergy.
PEMEX is exploring new energy generation and resource exploitation projects that leverage its existing infrastructure for hydrocarbon exploration, production, and distribution. These initiatives aim to extend the value and lifespan of current assets and include ventures, such as the exploration of hydrogen fields, as well as pursuing geothermal energy development and electricity generation on decommissioned offshore platforms. Additionally, the company is pursuing specific projects aimed at reducing gas flaring, among other sustainability-focused efforts.
As part of this shift, the company is looking to enter electricity generation through non-fossil fuel sources. The statute outlines plans for renewable energy projects involving solar, wind, hydro, biofuels, and other initiatives aligned with its long-term energy transition goals.
This updated organic statute aligns with the push by the current PEMEX administration to pursue a more active role in the energy transition. During his official presentation at the start of President Claudia Sheinbaum's term, PEMEX Director General Víctor Rodríguez emphasized the company’s role in moving toward cleaner energy.
“We are going to make a major effort to develop renewable energy sources, every one we are able to, and PEMEX is going to play a fundamental role,” said Rodríguez. “PEMEX will not be limited to oil, gas, condensates, and what it has always done. Now we are going to pursue new projects.”
