The rehabilitation of the Zimapan hydroelectric plant, a key project spearheaded by CFE to enhance the national electrical system, has reached 96% completion and is expected to be finalized this year. The investment for the rehabilitation amounts to US$73.24 million. This project is part of a broader initiative aimed at upgrading the country's electrical infrastructure, encompassing a total of 35 projects with a generation capacity of 13,920MW.

Despite significant progress, 22 projects remain unfinished. As announced during President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's morning conference, the total investment in strengthening the electrical sector is US$20 billion. The aim of these projects is to increase electrical service coverage for both the population and the industry, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the national electrical system.

CFE’s hydroelectric generation amounted to 19,406GWh last year, contributing only 13.4% to the company's total production. This is a significant drop from 24.4%% in 2022, when hydroelectric power accounted for 34,109GWh, representing the lowest hydroelectric output since 2004, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and INEGI. Despite plans to increase this type of production as a key part of the current administration's clean energy strategy, there has been a 43% reduction in CFE's hydroelectric generation over the past year. This represents a 36% decrease compared to the final year of the previous administration in 2018, and a 28% decrease over the past decade, as reported by MBN.
