Q: What was the motivation to create My English Partners?

A: Besides recognizing a need in the market, we also saw an opportunity. I think most people know a bit of English but finding someone who is proficient, who can use business English or engage in negotiations is rare. We expect to see this trend continue over the next few years.

During the pandemic, we also have seen the decentralization of the economy in many ways. In Mexico, many people are leaving big cities and this will create an opportunity for people to access quality English language offerings remotely. Our main target is people who are already in the labor market, who have already experienced workers and do not have to leave their home to do an online course. We know that these people already have a certain skill set that can be exploited. Currently, 80 percent of our students are professionals and 20 percent are students.

The pandemic has also led people to become familiar with video calls. We see this as an opportunity to reach a larger audience that would not have previously ventured to learn a new language remotely. We believe that as soon as things return to normal, activities such as telemedicine, remote work and online education will become part of our daily lives. 

Q: How do you use and mine artificial intelligence through your platform?

A: We assess users to determine the starting point for the course. Gradually, our technology detects what is easy and what is difficult for the user to learn, as well as their log-in patterns. All this data helps us to shape a person's learning experience in weeks.

We want to scale up this learning through data to better help students. On the platform, for example, students write their tests digitally and the results and insights are sent to the teachers. This helps them to improve their teaching methods and advance faster with the students. Artificial intelligence has not been used like this in the market. One of the long-term objectives of this tool is to generate predictive models. Through WhatsApp, a bot can answer students' questions, while being connected to a database so it can monitor their progress, flaws and even how they speak.  

Q: What partnerships are you looking for to offer the program at academic institutions or companies?

A: We have held discussions with some of the major companies in Latin America. However, for now, we have decided to focus on organic growth. Achieving alliances is certainly among our medium-term objectives but for now, we want to focus on growing and solidifying the platform. We continue to develop the model, attracting students and promoting the platform.
