Banorte Commits to Planting 1 Million Trees in Mexico by 2030
Grupo Financiero Banorte has announced its commitment to grow 1 million trees in Mexico between 2025 and 2030 as part of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) One Trillion Trees initiative. The institution is the first in Mexico’s private sector to join this global reforestation effort, which aims to conserve, restore, and grow a trillion trees worldwide to combat climate change and protect natural ecosystems.
Carlos Hank González, Chairman of the Board, Grupo Financiero Banorte, emphasized the significance of the initiative. “Our commitment to sustainability is a pledge to reforest Mexico. This alliance is an investment in planting life across Mexico and its communities, contributing to the country's well-being and prosperity for this and future generations,” he said.
Nicole Schwab, Co-Lead of the Nature Positive Pillar, WEF, welcomed Banorte’s involvement. “This commitment is the first from the private sector in Mexico and will play a critical role in the collective work of the One Trillion Trees platform this decade. The private sector in Mexico has a catalytic role in driving climate action and ecosystem restoration,” he noted.
Banorte’s initiative focuses on ensuring long-term survival and growth through activities such as developing nurseries, producing seedlings, providing education and training, mobilizing communities, engaging youth, and leveraging technology to monitor progress. The program will involve collaboration with Reforestamos México and other organizations to coordinate efforts with indigenous peoples and local communities.
This commitment is part of Banorte’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes adopting the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework. The TNFD helps organizations identify the impacts, dependencies, risks, and opportunities associated with nature, further reinforcing Banorte’s dedication to sustainable development.
