Boehringer Ingelheim, a global biopharmaceutical company, has pledged US$5 million in collaboration with the WHO Foundation to enhance access to quality mental health services in the Americas. This effort is part of a broader initiative to address mental health challenges, particularly in communities facing a heightened risk of suicide. The financial support is set to advance the WHO Fourteenth General Program of Work from 2025 to 2028, focusing on equitable healthcare access.

The partnership between Boehringer Ingelheim and the WHO Foundation aligns with the WHO’s ongoing goal of “Health for All.” It includes support for the WHO’s Investment Round and evidence-based programs aimed at suicide prevention among vulnerable populations across the Americas.

“WHO’s mission of Health for All can only be achieved with the combined commitment of the public and private sectors,” says Anil Soni, CEO, WHO Foundation. “Boehringer Ingelheim is meeting WHO’s call to action by making a pledge of predictable and flexible resources, affirming WHO’s essential role in global public health.”

Beyond financial support, Boehringer Ingelheim has committed to making a long-term investment in mental health research. The company aims to redefine healthcare delivery for people with serious mental illnesses through innovative research and global partnerships. This effort extends to supporting initiatives like the Friendship Bench, a mental health program in Zimbabwe that trains community volunteers to offer psychological support, showcasing a holistic approach to mental health.

The partnership also seeks to inspire additional collaboration across industries and philanthropy, emphasizing a collective approach to improving healthcare access. Boehringer Ingelheim and the WHO Foundation hope their joint efforts will encourage others to contribute resources and expertise, creating a broader impact on global health outcomes.

As Boehringer Ingelheim and the WHO Foundation move forward with this initiative, they aim to address gaps in healthcare access and ensure that vulnerable populations receive the support they need. The collaboration underscores the growing recognition of mental health as a crucial component of overall public health, with a focus on creating sustainable change.
