New research presented at Digestive Disease Week in Washington, the United States, reveals that specific genetic profiles could predict better responses to Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drug Wegovy among patients with obesity. The study suggests that individuals with a specific genetic trait are more likely to lose significant weight with Wegovy, compared to those without, potentially impacting personalizing obesity treatment and healthcare costs.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic, involved 84 people with obesity or other weight management issues, reports Reuters. It suggests that patients with a specific genetic profile associated with a “hungry gut” — where individuals feel full during meals but become hungry shortly afterward due to faster food digestion — are more likely to respond to Wegovy. The drug slows down digestion and reduces appetite, according to Sesamecare.com

Patients with this genetic profile showed a strong response to Wegovy, losing an average of 14.4% of their total body weight after nine months and 19.5% after a year, says Andres Acosta, Researcher,  Mayo Clinic. In contrast, participants without this genetic profile lost 10.3% of their body weight after nine months and showed no further loss 12 months later.

"These findings could potentially be used to identify patients who would benefit the most from Wegovy, given its high cost," says Acosta. Wegovy is priced at US$1,349.02 per month.

The researchers emphasized the need for larger studies to confirm the reliability of the "hungry gut" genetic profile across diverse populations. If validated, doctors could use this information to personalize treatment decisions for patients struggling with obesity.
