Medsi AI has introduced a new voice analysis tool capable of detecting mental and cognitive health conditions using only a smartphone microphone. The feature will be integrated into its existing platform, which is already approved as a Class II Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) by COFEPRIS.

The tool captures and analyzes acoustic and linguistic patterns from a 40-second voice recording to detect early signs of depression, anxiety, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. It does not process the content of speech, thereby maintaining privacy, and instead evaluates vocal attributes such as fluency, tone variation, and speech control to assess mental and cognitive states.

This development comes amid growing concern over mental health in Mexico, where anxiety disorders affect nearly one in five young adults and more than 20% of older adults in Mexico City show symptoms of depression, according to Medsi AI. Despite increasing demand, mental health services remain limited as only 30% of primary care centers in the country have protocols to address them, and fewer than 15% of health workers report having received mental health training.

“Mexico is experiencing a mental health emergency. Our voice analysis technology turns everyday smartphones into clinical-grade diagnostic tools, helping detect problems before symptoms are visible,” says Manuel Villalvazo, CEO and Co-Founder, Medsi AI.

Medsi AI’s platform now combines voice biomarkers with remote photoplethysmography (rPPG), a method that uses a smartphone camera to detect physiological signals related to stress. Together, the two tools measure vital signs from separate channels to provide an accurate, compound evaluation of emotional and cognitive health.

The company has begun clinical validation protocols in Spanish-speaking populations in partnership with medical professionals and is targeting high-stress occupations such as healthcare workers, firefighters, and public safety personnel for early deployment.

The platform also supports Mexico’s updated regulatory requirements mandating psychosocial risk assessments in the workplace. Employers can use Medsi AI’s tools to complement traditional annual surveys with regular, objective monitoring of employee well-being.

Medsi AI’s voice technology can also detect respiratory health indicators through the analysis of cough patterns. Its algorithms distinguish between different types of coughs, including those associated with tuberculosis and COVID-19, broadening the company’s potential for public health monitoring.

The company plans to continue refining its technology through further clinical trials and product development. With most of the population already equipped with smartphones, Medsi AI aims to make early detection and monitoring of mental health conditions widely accessible.
