As part of World Breastfeeding Week, observed globally on Aug. 1–7, Mexico’s Ministry of Health is reinforcing its commitment to increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life to at least 50% by 2025, a target set by the World Health Assembly.

This year's campaign, held under the theme “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a Difference for Working Parents,” calls for sustainable systems that provide comprehensive support for breastfeeding women. National institutes of health, referral hospitals, and high-specialty regional facilities are joining efforts to promote breastfeeding through education and support initiatives, says Silvia Romero, Deputy Director of Neonatology, National Institute of Perinatology (INPer).

At INPer, activities include webinars and educational sessions aimed at pregnant women, focused on the health benefits of breastfeeding from the newborn's first day. Health professionals will offer guidance on best practices, while also promoting early mother-infant contact, skin-to-skin bonding, and breastfeeding within the first hour of life with the support of INPer’s Lactation Clinic, neonatology team, and the human milk bank.

A key component of the campaign is the promotion of breastfeeding-friendly work environments. Romero emphasizes the importance of breastfeeding rooms and access to continued education to help women sustain breastfeeding once they return to their professional duties. Half of the women receiving care at INPer are first-time mothers, underscoring the relevance of these support structures.

By involving healthcare professionals, institutions, and employers, the Ministry of Health aims to strengthen the systems needed for breastfeeding success, aligned with global goals for child health and maternal well-being.
