Pets Enhance Mental, Physical Well-Being: CONASAMA
In observance of World Dog Day on July 21, Evalinda Barrón, Director General, National Commission of Mental Health and Addictions (CONASAMA), highlighted the critical role pets play in enhancing both mental and physical health. Barrón notes that pets help alleviate symptoms of loneliness, stress, and depression, especially for those with mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.
Research indicates that people living with pets are less likely to suffer from depression, as the companionship of animals offers comfort and a sense of purpose, as reported by Mexico’s MInistry of Health (SSA). The daily responsibilities of pet care introduce structure and routine into their owners' lives, which can help manage feelings of sadness and isolation.
The interaction between humans and pets has been shown to stimulate the release of oxytocin, vasopressin, and endorphins which are hormones associated with happiness. Simultaneously, levels of cortisol, a stress-related hormone, tend to decrease, contributing to overall well-being. For example, dog owners have a lower risk of dying from heart attacks or strokes compared to those who do not own dogs, according to The American Heart Association.
Beyond providing companionship, pets can also support many aspects of human lives. Service animals, for example, can help people with physical disabilities, alert individuals to seizures, signal those with hearing impairments, and support the visually impaired. Emotional support animals (ESAN), on the other hand, provide companionship to those facing mental health challenges, disabilities, or personal crises, helping them overcome fear, anxiety, trauma, or phobias through affection and presence.
Barrón also highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership. She urges people to provide pets with quality care, including a dignified home, regular medical check-ups, a complete vaccination schedule, and proper nutrition and hydration.
World Dog Day serves to raise awareness about the responsibilities of pet ownership and the health benefits pets offer. Pets are considered family members, showing unconditional love and dedication throughout their lives, from the moment they meet their owners until they pass away.
As society increasingly recognizes the therapeutic benefits of pets, the role of animals in supporting mental and physical health continues to gain importance. This recognition underscores the need for proper pet care and the fostering of a positive human-animal bond to enhance overall well-being.
