SSA Strengthens Efforts to Fight Gender Violence
Mexico's Ministry of Health (SSA) is advancing efforts to combat gender violence through a nationwide care network and prevention initiatives. As part of these efforts, it will present a "Decalogue of Commitments" to enhance coordinated, rights-based responses, reinforcing its role in fostering safe and equitable environments for women and girls.
On Nov. 29, 2024, as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the SSA will present a “Decalogue of Commitments for the Prevention and Comprehensive Attention to Sexual Violence Against Girls, Adolescents, and Women.” This initiative seeks to unify public health institutions in delivering integrated, rights-based, and discrimination-free care to address this pervasive issue effectively.
In 1999, the United Nations designated Nov. 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This annual observance aims to raise awareness and foster strategies to combat violence against women globally. To reinforce these efforts, the UN also established "Orange Days," marked on the 25th of each month, to maintain momentum in addressing this critical issue, as reported by SSA.
Mexico's federal healthcare sector actively participates in these monthly observances, underscoring its commitment to tackling gender-based violence. Yolanda Varela, General Director, National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health (CNEGSR), highlights the availability of a national network of specialized services to provide psycho-emotional and medical support for victims of gender and sexual violence. This network offers psychological care, medical treatment for physical injuries, safety planning, and guidance to access additional services provided by other institutions.
The specialized centers operate across all 32 states, staffed with trained professionals to ensure comprehensive care, follow-up, and referrals for those affected by gender-based violence. Varela adds that the CNEGSR leads the Mexican Health Sector in developing and coordinating public policies related to family planning, reproductive health, maternal and perinatal care, gender equality, and the prevention and treatment of gender-based violence.
These efforts align with the SSA’s focus on prevention, primary care, and fostering safe environments to support the well-being and development of women and girls in Mexico.
