Mexico City Launches Measures Against Workplace Gender Violence
The Mexico City Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (STYFE) has launched a series of initiatives aimed at addressing workplace violence from a gender perspective. Central to this effort is the introduction of the "violentómetro laboral" (Workplace Violence Meter), a tool designed to raise awareness and help prevent various forms of violence within work environments.
Inés González, Minister, STYFE, highlights that the movement aligns with broader actions led by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada. These initiatives prioritize the prevention, attention, and eradication of violence affecting women in the city, as reported by STYFE.
“The violentómetro laboral is a practical tool that enables women workers to recognize and report harmful practices in the workplace,” says González. She explains that the tool uses a color-coded system with five levels to categorize different manifestations of violence, offering a clear guide to identify and address these behaviors.
The tool will be distributed during community outreach activities, and will be available at the STPYFE’s offices and online through the agency’s social media channels under Trabajo CDMX.
The meter says that the progression of violence often begins with seemingly minor behaviors, such as hurtful jokes, verbal aggression, or ridicule, highlighting the importance of addressing these early warning signs to prevent escalation.
The STPYFE has partnered with the Mexico City Institute for Work Training (ICAT) to offer a free online course titled “Discrimination and Violence in the Workplace: Causes, Manifestations, and Strategies to Combat Them.” The course provides resources for workers and employers to identify and address workplace violence and discrimination.
To further support women facing gender-based violence at work, the STPYFE provides legal and psychological assistance through its Subprosecutor's Office for the Assistance of Female Workers. This service offers personalized guidance to ensure cases are addressed effectively and that victims receive the necessary support.
