Transforming, Digitalizing the Healthcare Experience in Mexico
STORY INLINE POST
Imagine being a patient in Mexico in search of a healthcare specialist. Traditional options can be frustrating: relying on public healthcare services with interminable wait times, visiting a pharmacy doctor with limited specialization, or navigating the challenge of scheduling an appointment with a private physician over the phone — often a tedious and complicated task. Now, envision a far more efficient experience: accessing a digital platform from your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Within minutes, you can explore thousands of specialists, complete with detailed information on their credentials, availability, and location, alongside millions of patient reviews. Available 24/7, it offers speed, transparency, and convenience at your fingertips.
The transformation extends into the doctor’s office as well. Picture leaving behind the physician jotting notes with pen and paper and instead, receiving care from a specialist leveraging digital tools, delivering a smoother and more modern experience. This future is already a reality with Doctoralia, where specialists utilize technology to be easily discoverable, gather patient information in advance, and — starting at the end of 2024 — employ artificial intelligence tools to automatically transcribe consultations. This innovation allows doctors to focus entirely on their patients, creating a more human and efficient experience. Additionally, follow-up information can be sent digitally, and patients can share feedback to guide others in making informed healthcare decisions.
Healthcare access in Mexico has faced significant challenges. According to the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL), nearly 30% of the population lacks access to health services — a figure that has nearly doubled from previous years, according to an August 2023 report in El Economista. Furthermore, in 2022, around 16% of the population was deemed vulnerable due to limited access to healthcare, according to Statista.
Doctoralia, after seven years of operation in Mexico, has become the leading platform connecting healthcare specialists with millions of patients. In 2024, more than 20 million people used the platform to connect with specialists, revolutionizing healthcare access across the country. Over 1 million new specialist reviews were generated on our platform. However, our potential reach is even greater, as our website receives more than 11 million monthly visits, complemented by hundreds of thousands more on our mobile apps. This widespread use positions Doctoralia as the second most-visited healthcare website in Mexico, trailing only the IMSS platform.
Doctoralia’s impact goes beyond numbers. As we look ahead to 2025, we continue to innovate to bridge healthcare access gaps. Our tools enhance specialists’ efficiency: software that automates administrative tasks, AI-powered robots that handle appointment scheduling calls, AI-assisted automatic transcription for structured medical records, online payment systems that streamline transactions, and automated reminders that improve patient follow-up. While other digital solution providers exist, Doctoralia stands out by offering an integrated experience that bundles multiple solutions under a single subscription, backed by the continuous innovation of our parent company, Docplanner.
In the landscape of healthcare digitalization in Mexico, many companies are developing innovative solutions to improve care delivery. However, whereas other providers focus on specific areas, Doctoralia delivers a comprehensive solution that enhances access to a broad range of medical services, improving the experience for both patients and professionals alike.
To support this mission, we have committed to investing more than MX$540 million (US$26 million) to continue transforming the healthcare experience in Mexico throughout 2025. This investment reflects our dedication to quality, bolstering our presence, expanding the availability of specialists in cities across the country, and advancing our digital tools to offer a unique experience for doctors and patients.
There is still much to be done. What if platforms like Doctoralia collaborated with the public sector? Imagine a system where technology not only connects patients and doctors but also makes healthcare more accessible, efficient, and humane for all Mexicans. That is the future we are building. In Mexico, electronic health records must comply with NOM-024, the regulation governing healthcare information systems (SSA3-2012), focusing on standardization, interoperability, and security. One of our primary projects for 2025 is obtaining certification for our electronic health records in alignment with local regulations, ensuring data collection is consistent with public hospital standards and enabling simplified information sharing.
The path to healthcare digitalization in Mexico remains long, but with collaborative efforts aimed at a shared goal, the country’s more than 120 million inhabitants will gain access to better health services. The future of healthcare in Mexico is digital, accessible, and humane. At Doctoralia, we are not just imagining this future — we are building it. Join us in this transformation!
