IFT Creates Interactive Map for Zones Affected By Otis

Reestablishing energy supply and communication is one of the many challenges Guerrero faces to recover from Hurricane Otis. In response, the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) developed an "Interactive Map of Mobile Coverage Availability in Acapulco," aiming to assist users in locating places with mobile service coverage.

The map is meant to be a temporary tool to enhance communication for as long as necessary, helping users find places with mobile service coverage to communicate with their relatives or perform activities through this service. 

The IFT states that the map will be updated daily based on the working advances made by the mobile service operators to reestablish communications in Acapulco and other municipalities affected by Hurricane Otis. 

The map displays the availability of mobile services in several colors: regular (orange) indicates there might be intermittent coverage; good (yellow) includes access to basic services like social networks, calls, and internet browsing; and excellent (green) denotes that users can use their mobile service without any issues.

The coverage maps were generated through crowdsourcing data from Ookla, which provides invaluable insight into the performance, quality, and accessibility of networks worldwide, says the IFT. The data is collected from users’ cell phones, tablets, and computers. 

The estimation presented depends on the mobility patterns of the users and uses areas where mobile service has been restored as a reference. The IFT warns that there might be locations where service is available but does not appear on the map due to the absence of users.
