World-class freight companies J.B. Hunt Transport Services, BNSF Railway, and GMXT are launching Quantum de México, a new intermodal service designed for businesses with time-sensitive freight needs.
The announcement was made during the Congreso Intermodal de la Asociación Mexicana del Transporte Intermodal (AMTI). The service aims to enhance cross-border transportation by offering faster and more consistent delivery performance through rail.
Quantum de México is modeled after the Quantum service launched in the US by J.B. Hunt and BNSF in November 2023. It targets shippers requiring high service reliability and expedited delivery timelines. The companies report that the service achieves a 95% or higher on-time delivery rate and is up to one day faster than traditional intermodal transport options.
“This collaboration brings the full suite of our intermodal service and its unmatched scale and capacity to Mexico,” says Spencer Frazier, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, J.B. Hunt. “Mode conversion is a significant opportunity for businesses to improve efficiency and reduce costs.”
The offering includes 24/7 oversight by dedicated teams from all three companies, real-time shipment tracking, and additional services such as priority drayage and streamlined railcar operations. It is positioned to support supply chains in Mexico’s most important exporting sectors, such as automotive, agriculture, electronics, and manufacturing.
Quantum de México will operate on key freight corridors, connecting major US cities such as Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, the West Coast, and eastern destinations with major Mexican markets including Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.
To support the initiative, J.B. Hunt has opened a new office in Queretaro. The move underscores the company’s commitment to growing its presence in the region as cross-border freight demand continues to rise.
The launch follows the companies’ 2024 introduction of intermodal service through the Eagle Pass Gateway, further expanding their North American logistics network. J.B. Hunt operates the largest intermodal fleet on the continent, while BNSF manages the largest intermodal rail network. GMXT is Mexico’s leading rail provider.
“Quantum de México represents a milestone in our shared efforts to deliver improved logistics solutions,” says Jon Gabriel, Group Vice President of Consumer Products, BNSF. “This expands our ability to serve customers across borders more effectively.”
The alliance also enhances service quality while supporting innovation and efficiency. “Rail and intermodal services continue to be vital partners to industries in Mexico and beyond,” says Luis Hernández, Vice President of Intermodal, GMXT.
Mexico is one of the world’s top 10 exporters, with over two-thirds of its exports bound for the United States. Despite this, nearly 70% of cross-border freight still moves by truck. The companies view intermodal rail as an opportunity to shift a portion of that freight to rail-based solutions, allowing carbon emissions to be reduced by about 65% per shipment compared to traditional over-the-road transportation.
The joint service is aimed at addressing rising demand for cross-border logistics while enabling businesses to reduce costs and environmental impact.
