UNAM’s National Seismological Service (SSN) will expand its seismic monitoring network with the installation of approximately 40 new stations over the next two years. The project will be financed with resources from the Natural Disaster Prevention Fund.

Arturo Iglesias, Head, SSN, stated that the expansion will focus on regions with limited coverage, such as Chihuahua and Nuevo Leon, as well as high-seismicity areas in the south, like Oaxaca, where coverage is still considered insufficient. "It will serve to put us in a better position to monitor and characterize the country's seismicity," Iglesias said.
The project also includes strengthening the infrastructure at the SSN's main headquarters at UNAM, its Alternate Monitoring Center in Pachuca, Hidalgo, and the Accelerographic Network managed by UNAM's Institute of Engineering.

The SSN, which was founded in 1910, currently operates nearly 100 stations and records an average of 100 earthquakes daily. According to Luis Quintanar, Researcher, UNAM's Institute of Geophysics, SSN was a key contributor to the creation of the National Civil Protection System following the 1985 earthquake.
