Paris Olympics Lead the Way in Sustainability

The 2024 Paris Olympics aim to reduce their carbon footprint by 50% compared to previous Games, targeting a CO2 emission limit of 1.75Mt. Key strategies include using existing venues, constructing only one new facility with sustainable materials, and enhancing public transportation with electric and hydrogen-fueled options. Additionally, the Games will prioritize plant-based food and offset unavoidable emissions through global environmental projects, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability and efficient resource use.

Glass Recycling Hub in Chihuahua Aims to Boost Sustainability

O-I Mexico partnered with SILICE to establish a groundbreaking glass recycling hub in Chihuahua, aiming to address Mexico's low glass recycling rates. Inaugurated in July, the hub will initially process 200t of glass monthly, with a future capacity of 900t, significantly increasing the region's recycling capabilities. This initiative supports UN Sustainable Development Goals by reducing landfill waste, conserving resources, and promoting a more sustainable economic model, while also generating jobs and advancing glass recycling efforts nationwide.

Renewable Energy Surpasses Fossil Fuels in EU for the First Time

In the first half of 2024, wind and solar energy surpassed fossil fuels in electricity generation across the European Union for the first time, accounting for 30% of the EU's electricity. This shift reflects a 17% decline in fossil fuel use and is attributed to increased renewable capacity, mild weather, and strong hydroelectric performance. Notably, 13 EU Member States now generate more electricity from renewables than fossil fuels, with Spain and Poland achieving significant milestones in wind and solar power.

Rainwater Harvesting Systems Installed in Mexico City Schools

Mexico City’s Ministry of Environment (SEDEMA) has installed 2,338 rainwater harvesting systems in public primary and secondary schools, aiming to capture up to 918 million L of water annually. This initiative, which started in December 2023, will benefit around 1.3 million people by providing sustainable water for various school activities and reducing reliance on the city's aquifer. The systems are expected to cut 359.4t of CO2e per year, mitigate flooding risks, and ease the strain on the city's water distribution and extraction infrastructure.
