The Week in Mining underscores the ideas exchanged at Mexico Mining Forum, where top industry leaders got together for a day of dialogue and networking. Additionally, ICMM published its enhanced principles in an effort to raise mining standards.

Mexico

Undersecretary of Mining Francisco Quiroga declared at Mexico Mining Forum that Mexico is on its way to become a top producer of materials for renewable energies.

At the event, Luiz Camargo, Country Manager of Minera Cuzcatlan, pointed out that mining’s main challenge is to shift paradigms and unambiguously become a source of economic and social development.

Santa Cruz Silver Mining announced that it will conduct a non-brokered private placement of up to 25 million units for gross proceeds to the company of up to CA$3 million (US$2.3 million).

International

At least 11 artisanal miners in northern Mozambique’s Montepuez ruby mine have died following a series of tunnel collapses over three days.

UK mining and quarrying industry earnings have increased by more than £$2 billion (US$2.61 billion) since the UK voted to leave the EU in June 2016, according to an analysis of the latest Office for National Statistics data by R&D tax relief specialist, Catax.

ICMM has launched its enhanced membership requirements, which now include site-level validation and transparent disclosure.
