Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with representatives of Torex Gold. The meeting took place within the framework of the North American Leaders’ Summit in Mexico City.

The Canadian Office of the Prime Minister reported that Trudeau met with Jody Kuzenko, President and CEO, Torex Gold, as well as other company representatives like Angie Robson, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, ESG and Communications, and Faysal Rodríguez, Senior Vice President of Mexican Operations. During the meeting, Trudeau congratulated Torex Gold on its leadership in diversity, equity and inclusion in the mining sector, as well as for its responsible management of abroad operations. He also acknowledged the company’s achievement as the second-largest gold producer in Mexico.

Among Torex Gold’s efforts for inclusion, Trudeau recognized the company’s program to create job opportunities for Mexican women. Company representatives shared their experiences in Mexico, highlighting best practices in community engagement and government relationships.

Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Mary Ng, recognized Kuzenko’s efforts toward the inclusion of women in the mining sector, which is historically known to be a male-dominated industry. Ng said that owing to these efforts, Torex Gold is setting the “gold” standard for women in business.

She also highlighted the importance of the mining industry in Mexico and Canada’s relationship, saying that it creates well-paid jobs and fosters sustainable development. “Torex Gold brings an inclusive approach to responsible mining by recruiting female representation in management and opening doors to promote the advancement of women in the mining industry, up-skilling local women and sourcing other women-owned businesses. [Kuzenko] is leading by example and bringing other women along with her,” Ng said on social media.

In August 2022, Torex Gold announced an investment of over US$906.2 million for the construction and kick-start of the Guerrero-based Media Luna Project, which aims to produce 80 percent gold and 20 percent copper. The project includes the installation of a conveyor belt that will cross the Balsas river via an underground tunnel to the company’s processing plant.

The company has also been working on ambitious environmental goals. In its Climate Change Report, Torex Gold set the goal of becoming a net-zero company by 2050, the company also announced an investment of over US$5 million for the construction of a solar plant to source energy for the Media Luna project with an 8.7MW capacity.
