Trump Expands 50% Steel, Aluminum Tariffs to 407 More Products
The US Department of Commerce has expanded tariffs on steel and aluminum to cover an additional 407 products, including baby chairs, wind turbines, railcars, furniture, heavy machinery, and compressors.
The move extends the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum, originally imposed by President Donald Trump earlier this year, to all goods containing these materials. The rule took effect on Aug. 18 and was detailed in the Federal Register on Aug. 19.
According to Jeffrey Kessler, US Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, the measure “closes loopholes for tariff evasion” and aims to strengthen US steel and aluminum industries.
Since returning to office, Trump has implemented tariffs of at least 10% on nearly all US trade partners, along with higher duties on economies such as the European Union and Japan. While consumer price impacts remain limited so far, analysts warn that costs could rise as companies struggle to absorb or pass on the additional tariff burden.
