The road to eco-friendly, efficient public transportation is sparking a wave of initiatives and investments. Jalisco, for example, wants to become the first state in Mexico to fully change its fleet to a more sustainable and technological one, making public transportation more accessible and efficient, according to state authorities.

The state renewed 100% of public transportation units to improve the quality of journeys, which represented an investment of over US$87.8 million from the state funds and more than US$278.8 million from the industry, according to the Government of Jalisco.

Governor of Jalisco Enrique Alfaro oversaw the delivery of 1,050 new buses, which, combined with previously delivered units, add to 2,616 buses. Of those, 921 will be operating on different routes in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area and medium-sized cities within the state.

The new buses will feature Euro V technology with low carbon emissions and universal accessibility. The fleet renewal work signifies a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to 23,000 tons of CO2 annually. They will also decrease (particulate matter) PM10 by 38%, at a fare of MX$9.50 (US$0.5).

Authorities will continue to enhance the service, says Diego Monraz, Minister of Transportation of Jalisco.

Miguel Elizalde, President, National Association of Bus, Truck, and Tractor Manufacturers, says that with this unit renewal, Jalisco will have the best fleet of buses in Mexico, while complying with regulations for public transportation and sustainability.

Authorities are also working on other public mobility projects, says Alfaro. These include the launch of Mi Tren’s Line 3 and Line 4, the latter of which will head toward Tlajomulco. Other projects include the Mi Macro Periferico, which is now operational; Mi Macro Calzada, which has been modernized; and Mi Transporte Electrico, the first 100% electric route in Mexico. Training has also been provided to public transportation drivers.
