PEMEX announced that on Feb. 18, officials from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change, and the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change at UNAM visited the Cadereyta refinery.

The visit aimed to review the measures implemented by PEMEX Transformación Industrial to improve air quality in the region. PEMEX stated that the refinery complies with all federal environmental regulations, with combustion equipment, perimeter monitoring, and zone influence assessments remaining within permissible environmental limits.

As a result of the visit, PEMEX and regulatory authorities agreed to collaborate on perimeter and zone influence monitoring. The effort will also consider emissions from other industrial facilities near the refinery that impact air quality.

Environmental Concerns

Last year, the Cadereyta refinery faced scrutiny for its environmental and health effects. Civil group Vibra Cívica called for a 2025 public consultation on its future, citing harmful emissions, while Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel García criticized its contribution to air pollution in Monterrey, sparking a public dispute with former President López Obrador, who defended the refinery’s operations.
