The reform to the Federal Public Administration, which entails the creation of new ministries and the restructuring of existing agencies, is set to move forward following the Senate's approval. The proposal aims to promote digital governance while ensuring a more efficient, effective, and fiscally responsible governmental framework.
With 82 votes in favor and 39 against, legislators approved the reform introduced by President Claudia Sheinbaum, which includes the establishment of the Ministry for Women, the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation, and the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency (ATDT). Additionally, the Ministry of Public Administration (SFP) will be restructured into the Ministry of Anticorruption and Good Governance.
The approval also encompassed regulatory adjustments to the powers of 15 federal ministries, with modifications to the responsibilities of eight of them. These ministries include the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection, Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, and the Ministry of Health.
The proposal justifies the reorganization of the Organic Law of the Federal Public Administration as a response to the country’s longstanding social and historical demands. “This transformation is crucial to address both global and national challenges, as well as various historical and social needs, while ensuring the conditions necessary for individual and community development,” the proposal states.
