The accelerated evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and chatbot technologies has significantly impacted digital platforms like WhatsApp, presenting both exciting opportunities and complex challenges. As co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at GUS, a company deeply immersed in the world of AI and chatbots, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of these technologies. In this introduction, I will share my perspective on how this new technology is shaping Mexico's digital future, particularly in the context of Meta's recent integration of AI agents into platforms like WhatsApp. From personalized interactions to their role in political campaigns, these technologies are revolutionizing user experiences and prompting discussions about the need for responsible regulation. Join me as we explore the remarkable impact of conversational AI and their potential to transform our lives in Mexico and beyond.

Recently, Meta unveiled its ambitious plans to integrate generative AI technologies into its consumer products, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. One of the most exciting developments in this announcement was the introduction of AI chatbots, referred to as AI agents by Meta, for Messenger and WhatsApp. These agents possess unique skill sets that mimic human behavior, and which are especially designed to interact with users in personalized and engaging ways.

The potential applications of these AI agents are vast and transformative. For example, a user at an airport could seek suggestions from the AI agent on what to do in the city during a layover. Users can also prompt the AI agent to respond to queries in specific styles, enabling a level of customization and personalization that was previously unattainable. This aligns with the broader trend of increasingly personalized digital experiences, showcasing the potential of AI to revolutionize how businesses and individuals engage with digital platforms.

Meta's entry into this space is set to democratize access to these advanced AI tools. Thanks to Meta's ad-supported business model, these tools will be freely available. This is a significant development, especially when compared to many competing apps on the App Store that often require ongoing subscriptions to access all features.

The integration of AI technology has profoundly impacted various industries, particularly the political sphere. Since 2018, AI has been employed to counter misinformation, engage with voters on a massive scale, automate campaign dissemination, and strengthen preference for specific candidates or political parties. The untapped potential of this technology remains substantial. In the US, it is predicted that AI's participation in the 2024 presidential elections will be decisive.

At GUS, we had our first encounter with the political sphere in 2022 when Democratic candidate Rick Caruso engaged our services for mass messaging campaigns during the Los Angeles mayoral elections. Over 200,000 messages were sent, achieving an 85% opening rate, to assess the electorate's trust and voting intentions. Political parties have observed how marketing directors and advertising strategists have utilized AI to enhance their results, convert more leads, and keep their target audience engaged. WhatsApp serves as the arena where all of this takes place.

WhatsApp, on its way to becoming the next Super App, has become a crucial tool for reaching new generations. Candidates have recognized the changing user behavior, with preferences shifting towards chat conversations over phone calls. Users seek the freedom to respond at their convenience, quick answers, autonomy in processes, and contact through calls only when previously requested or authorized.

WhatsApp has emerged as a valuable tool for refining electoral campaigns, understanding voter preferences and concerns through feedback surveys, replacing phone calls with personalized text messages, and conducting higher quality mass campaigns since WhatsApp imposes limitations on the number of messages a single account can send to prevent spam. Furthermore, it enables candidates to have a greater presence on a platform with 2.4 billion users and more than 200 million businesses with active WhatsApp Business accounts.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge that with great power comes great responsibility. AI technologies are powerful tools that can be used for both positive and negative purposes. As these tools can be harnessed to spread fake news, manipulate public opinion, and infringe on privacy rights, the need for an accelerated evolution on regulatory frameworks arises so that the use of AI upholds ethical standards and safeguards individual rights.

Furthermore, the democratization of access to advanced AI tools, thanks to Meta's ad-supported business model, ensures that these technologies are widely available without financial barriers. This accessibility fosters innovation and empowers businesses and individuals to leverage the benefits of AI technology.
