Authorities awarded Environmental Quality and Clean Industry certificates to 33 facilities in the hydrocarbon sector that participated in the National Environmental Audit Program (PNAA), recognizing improvements in energy efficiency and environmental performance. The certificates were presented at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) headquarters by Minister of Environment Alicia Bárcena and Armando Ocampo, Executive Director, Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment (ASEA). The facilities completed audits under the PNAA and met requirements related to emissions control, waste management, and resource efficiency.

Bárcena says the initiative supports an orderly energy transition, placing improved resource management and sustainability as pillars of national development. She adds that the effort aligns with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s approach to environmental policy, which she described as science-based and focused on public well-being. “These distinctions are more than a document; they are voluntary public policy instruments and tangible evidence that Mexico is moving toward a development model that respects the environment, strengthens competitiveness and places the protection of natural heritage at the center,” Bárcena said during the award ceremony.

Ocampo says the PNAA has become “an essential tool to strengthen the environmental performance of the hydrocarbons sector,” adding that the program aims to go beyond legal compliance by building organizational cultures that prevent risks and promote more efficient use of natural resources. “From ASEA, we will continue promoting policies that foster operational efficiency, reduce environmental impacts and strengthen a safe and environmentally responsible energy industry,” Ocampo says.

The PNAA is a voluntary policy instrument that allows regulated entities to assess their overall environmental performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement measures to reduce emissions, waste generation, and resource consumption. Facilities that successfully complete the process can receive Clean Industry or Environmental Quality certificates, which recognize compliance with environmental regulations and commitments to continuous improvement.

Companies receiving certifications include Orsan, Hidrosina, OXXO Gas, Servicio Fácil, Gasolinera Solidaridad, Gasoductos Servicios Corporativos, Compresión Altamira, F Tapias México II, Operadora CICSA, Transportadora del Norte SH, and Asfaltos Mesoamericanos.

ASEA says the certified facilities will be eligible to participate in the 2026 statistical reporting exercise, joining installations that took part in 2025 and achieved measurable environmental results. According to the agency, outcomes from participating facilities include savings of more than 52,000 m3 of water, equivalent to the annual consumption of about 580 people, and the avoidance of 4.6GW-hours of electricity use, comparable to the yearly consumption of 2,055 residents.

Additional results include the prevention of 83 metric tons of municipal and special-handling solid waste, equivalent to the waste generated annually by 277 people, and the avoidance of 72.78 metric tons of hazardous waste, reducing health and environmental risks.

ASEA says the PNAA contributes to the federal government’s broader policy framework, including the 100 commitments outlined by President Sheinbaum. The program supports Commitment 93, which targets air pollution, and Objective 4.3 of the National Development Plan 2025–2030, which focuses on reducing pollutant emissions and strengthening climate resilience.
