Mexico Aligns Biodiversity, Climate Action, Business Commitments
Mexico, with support from UNDP, hosted a workshop to align its national biodiversity targets with climate goals under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The event gathered 37 officials from 11 institutions to define climate-related targets (adaptation, mitigation, acidification) and prepare for Mexico’s updated climate commitment at COP30. A parallel meeting with the Ministry of Economy focused on private sector co-responsibility and financing for biodiversity, as part of efforts to update Mexico’s National Biodiversity Strategy.
Mexico Ranks Fourth in Green Investment in Latin America
A new ranking by Exness Insights places Mexico fourth in Latin America for green investment, highlighting US$4.3 billion in green bonds and US$3.2 billion in renewable energy invested over the past two decades. The country also hosts 94 B Corp-certified companies and has strong renewable energy potential, with solar and wind resources capable of exceeding current electricity demand 100-fold. Despite regulatory hurdles, Mexico's Sustainable Finance Mobilization Strategy and actions by major banks are paving the way for increased low-carbon investment.
Nuevo Laredo Mayor Touts Water, SDG Progress at UN
Carmen Lilia Canturosas, Nuevo Laredo Mayor, highlighted the city’s achievements in cross-border cooperation during the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, focusing on SDG 17 to strengthen partnerships. She showcased major investments in water sanitation, including US$81.2 million from Mexican and US agencies, resulting in clean water access for 17,000 residents and a 99% reduction in untreated wastewater discharged into the Rio Grande. Additionally, Canturosas detailed key infrastructure projects and social programs aimed at boosting trade, supporting migrants, and advancing sustainability, reinforcing Nuevo Laredo’s role as a model for binational innovation.
Mexico Launches Technical Process for Circular Economy Policy
SEMARNAT has initiated a technical process to develop its National Circular Economy Policy for 2025–2030, aiming to shift from a linear to a sustainable resource-efficient economic model. Supported by the French Development Agency and Global Factor consultancy, this process includes drafting a General Circular Economy Law and a National Circular Economy Strategy, with participation from key federal agencies coordinated by an Intersecretarial Circular Economy Committee. The policy focuses on shared prosperity, climate mitigation, biodiversity preservation, and innovation, while aligning with global efforts such as the upcoming UN Global Plastics Treaty and positioning Mexico as a leader in Latin America’s circular economy transition.
Mexico Strengthens Environmental Education, Conservation Efforts
SEMARNAT and SEP signed a Framework Collaboration Agreement to strengthen environmental education throughout Mexico’s National Education System, focusing on interculturality, socio-environmental justice, and climate adaptation. The agreement promotes community projects like reforestation and ecological restoration, and aims to reduce single-use plastics in schools, aligning with the New Mexican School model’s environmental awareness goals. Meanwhile, CONANP and ECOCE partnered to enhance environmental education and waste management at Sumidero Canyon National Park in Chiapas, targeting solid waste reduction and promoting recycling culture among visitors and local communities.
