The Mexican Senate has launched Visionaries 2030: The First Generation, a platform designed to strengthen national efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The initiative seeks to unite leaders across sectors to promote coordinated action on sustainability, equality, and justice.

Amalia García Medina, president of the Commission for Monitoring the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda, noted that Mexico faces significant delays in meeting its SDG commitments and called for a “deep and sustained commitment to protect life on the planet.” Citing UN Secretary-General António Guterres, García warned, “We are ending the era of global warming and entering the era of global boiling.”

The platform’s first generation includes representatives from education, health, technology, the environment, the economy, culture, and government. Each year, one leader will champion an SDG, coordinating actions and mobilizing networks to advance progress. “This model can inspire many others to join the cause,” García said.

Senator Emmanuel Reyes Carmona, chair of the Senate’s Economic Commission, stressed that achieving the 2030 Agenda “requires participation from all sectors,” including academia and all branches of government. He highlighted that 13.4 million Mexicans have been lifted out of poverty but noted ongoing challenges in inequality, education, and climate change.

Senator Yeidckol Polevnsky emphasized that while Mexico has advanced gender equality and women’s rights, commitments must now be translated into legal obligations. Nuevo León Governor Samuel García highlighted that his state has aligned policies with the 2030 Agenda, adopting a new constitution described as “the most federalist, green, and progressive in the country.”

Moderator Alejandra Fosado explained that Visionaries 2030 functions as a communication and alliance platform, enabling each SDG leader to document progress. “What is not communicated is not measured, and what is not told does not inspire,” she said, noting the goal is to amplify younger and more diverse voices by 2030.
