Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), held the Workshop on Mexico’s Nationally Determined Contribution 3.0 (NDC). The initiative sought to promote young people’s participation in climate action and raise awareness of Mexico’s international commitments to address climate change.

At the opening of the workshop, Mariana Butrón, Specialist in Adolescent Skills Development,  UNICEF Mexico, highlighted the importance of youth participation, noting that their perspective enriches climate action with a forward-looking approach. Iris Jiménez, Representative of the Coordinating Unit for International Affairs, SEMARNAT, added that including the voices of all people is essential to building effective climate policy actions.

The workshop featured interactive and playful activities led by UNICEF, allowing participants to understand climate change and how it affects their daily lives. SEMARNAT also presented Mexico’s main actions to address the climate crisis and protect the environment.

A central goal of the workshop was to listen to children’s and youth voices, recognizing them as key actors in shaping a sustainable future. SEMARNAT will consider the comments, ideas, and concerns shared during the session as part of the update process for the Nationally Determined Contribution 3.0, the document that reflects Mexico’s updated commitments under the Paris Agreement.
