RIU Hotels Invests US$6 Million in Mexico, Boosts Sustainability
RIU Hotels & Resorts revealed it has invested approximately US$6.02 million over the past decade in its sustainability strategy in Mexico, focusing on biodiversity, children’s welfare, and community development. The announcement was made at Riu Caribe in Cancun, Quintana Roo, during a presentation led by Naomi Riu, Executive Director and head of Corporate Social Responsibility, alongside directors Catalina Alemany and Alma Tesillos. More than 100 guests—including the State Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto—attended as RIU reviewed its progress under the Proudly Committed program, launched in 2024.
RIU’s social investment in Mexico has grown significantly, rising from roughly €18,000 in 2015 to nearly €1 million in 2024, totaling close to €6 million over the decade. Mexico now accounts for 29% of the chain’s global initiatives. Between 2019 and 2024, investment increased from €1.3 million to just over €3 million, a 143% rise.
Bernardo Cueto, speaking on behalf of Governor Mara Lezama, praised RIU’s efforts, noting the chain demonstrates how responsible tourism can drive economic growth while supporting community well-being. “This alliance shows that responsible tourism not only fosters economic growth but also enhances the well-being of our communities and preserves our natural paradise,” he said.
The chain currently collaborates with 17 partner organizations and implements 19 initiatives across Mazatlan, Los Cabos, Nayarit, Guadalajara, and Quintana Roo. Key projects include coral restoration, endangered species protection, health and education programs for children, and broader community support initiatives.
