SLB Capturi, a company specialized in carbon removal and reduction solutions inaugurated the world’s first industrial-scale carbon capture plant at Heidelberg Materials’ cement facility in Brevik, Norway. The plant, which has completed its mechanical construction, is now ready for testing and commissioning.

The plant is designed to capture up to 400,000t of CO2 annually. The full-scale plant includes systems for carbon capture, compression, heat integration, intermediate storage, and loadout facilities. Once operational, the plant will enable the production of net-zero cement, maintaining the product’s strength and quality while significantly reducing emissions.

“This milestone highlights the power of collaboration and the shared determination to make a positive climate impact. We look forward to moving into the commissioning and operational phases and hope the Brevik CCS plant will set a precedent for future carbon capture initiatives,” said Egil Fagerland, CEO, SLB Capturi.

The cement sector, known for its inherent emissions, is heavily reliant on carbon capture and storage (CCS) to achieve net-zero emissions. The Brevik CCS plant is part of The Longship CCS project, Europe’s first full-scale value chain for the capture, transport, and storage of industrial CO2 emissions.

Giv Brantenberg, General Manager of Northern Europe, Heidelberg Materials, highlighted the project as a significant achievement in the cement industry’s decarbonization efforts. “This project demonstrates our commitment to innovation and addressing climate change,” said Brantenberg.

The construction of the Brevik CCS plant has benefitted from strong support from Aker Solutions and local industry. The plant will enter the commissioning phase, with operations scheduled to begin in 2025.
