The Sonoran State Congress has unanimously approved a proposal urging Mexico’s federal government to strengthen programs and incentives for sustainable agriculture, with priority support for small and medium farmers.

The point of agreement, presented by Deputy Raúl Onofre Contreras, calls on the Ministry of Agriculture (SADER) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) to design or reinforce subsidies and support schemes that promote environmentally responsible farming practices.

The proposal argues that enhancing sustainable agriculture will help maintain long-term productivity while protecting natural resources. It highlights the benefits of crop rotation, efficient water use, and reduced reliance on chemical inputs to prevent soil degradation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Onofre Contreras emphasized that Mexico must protect its rich biodiversity, noting that the country hosts “around 200,000 species, representing about 12% of global biodiversity.” He stressed the need for sustainable strategies to safeguard these resources, including preserving native seeds, promoting organic farming, improving water management, and adopting informed irrigation practices. He also cited rain-stimulation projects for reservoir recharge and the importance of strengthening collaboration between producers and research institutions.

The deputy concluded that sustainable agriculture is vital to Mexico’s food security and should be backed by targeted programs that help farmers transition to more resilient and resource-efficient models. Strengthening these initiatives, he said, will support rural communities and ensure long-term environmental protection.
