Toroto Targets 5,000Ha for Ecosystem Restoration in Mexico
Mexican ecosystem restoration company Toroto announced its goal of rehabilitating 5,000ha in the coming years. The initiative will focus on carbon credit generation, water infiltration, and the protection of key species to address the country’s climate crisis.
As part of its strategy, Toroto aims to replenish 25 million m3 of water, equivalent to the annual consumption of 200,000 Mexico City residents. During a press conference marking its fifth anniversary, the organization outlined its business model, which centers on collaboration with 24 corporate partners from industries such as food and beverage, technology, and e-commerce. The company also works closely with 48 rural communities across 11 Mexican states, bridging the gap between natural resource conservation and economic activity.
"The environmental challenge we face collectively demands ambition. With five years of consolidated experience in climate action, we are expanding our reach and evolving our actions to strengthen life’s resilience, empower communities, and leave a lasting legacy," said Santiago Espinosa de los Monteros, Director, Toroto.
Since its founding, Toroto has reported a compound annual growth rate of 105% and has removed approximately 2Mt of CO2 from the atmosphere. It has sustainably managed more than 270,000 ha and replenished 6.5 million L of water annually, equivalent to the yearly water consumption of nearly 50,000 Mexico City residents.
Marisol Romero, Project Leader, Los Llanos de Apan, highlighted the local impact of Toroto’s work. “The experience with Toroto has been transformative for environmental education in the Almoloya community in Hidalgo. It has helped us make better decisions and strengthened our commitment to environmental care,” she said.
Toroto also reported significant growth in the carbon credit market. Between 2023 and 2024, the company increased carbon credit sales by 1,438%, moving from 104,000 credits in 2023 to 1.6 million in 2024. This reflects the global and regional expansion of the market, which generated US$723 million globally in 2023, according to Statista and Forest Trend data.
