If “disruption” was one of the most used words in 2020, then “resilience” is poised to play that role in upcoming years: for many companies, contingent workers will enable the agility needed to navigate the uncertainty ahead.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the way we work and many organizations have had to adapt quickly to ensure business continuity. One way in which this has manifested is the increasing use of a contingent workforce. Often known as independent contractors, freelancers or consultants, contingent workers are non-permanent employees usually hired on a project-by-project basis.

The traditional model of contingent staffing typically involved hiring workers who resided locally and could work on-site. However, after the pandemic, there has been an upsurge in momentum in remote contingent workers. “Remote work has become increasingly popular in recent years thanks to the rise of information technologies. With cloud-based tools, employees are no longer limited to physical contact with bosses and colleagues and it gives them the freedom to work from anywhere with just a portable device and an internet connection,” said Francisco Hurtado, Digital Business Technology Managing Director, Minsalt.

The rise of remote contingent staffing reflects a broader trend toward remote work and flexible staffing models, which offer many benefits to companies and workers alike. According to See Yang Foo, Managing Director and Country Head, PERSOLKELLY Singapore, “Flexibility in workforce planning, the ability to bring in niche skillsets to support short-term projects, the ease of filling roles without disrupting operations and having the extra time for employee evaluation before hiring them permanently are some of the many motivations for organizations to deploy a contingent workforce.”

This accelerated shift to remote work has many employees now seeking more flexibility and autonomy in their work arrangements. Edgar Lopez, Partner, Emerlid, told MBN that, “By 2027, more than 60 percent of the workforce of most companies will be made up of millennials; the logical thing to do is to change our mentality and build a flexible organization.”

“This phenomenon has allowed us to have people located in different cities of the country collaborate on projects based in Mexico City, or even in operations in other countries,” said Hurtado regarding Mexico. In addition, it has leveled the playing field for professionals who may not live in major metropolitan areas in getting equal opportunities.
