Tourism, often referred to as the "industry without smokestacks," is under increasing scrutiny for its environmental impact. While it does not involve manufacturing processes, the services it provides, including lodging, dining, and recreation, contribute significantly to pollution and environmental degradation. This issue has prompted a call for more responsible practices within the industry, as highlighted by the Mexican Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (CONCANACO).

A poignant example of the environmental toll of tourism came in 2016 at Playa del Amor in the Marietas Islands, off the coast of Nayarit, Mexico. The beach had to be temporarily closed and later reopened with limited capacity due to the damage caused by visitor activity.

Tourism is a significant contributor to the Mexican economy, representing 8% of the national GDP. Recognizing its importance, Mexico has taken steps to incorporate the concept of sustainable tourism into its legislation, as outlined in the General Tourism Law. According to this legal framework, sustainable tourism aims to optimize natural resources without causing significant environmental harm, providing economic benefits to rural and indigenous communities, and respecting and preserving the cultural heritage of local communities,  pointed out CONCANACO.

While Mexico has made progress in this regard, challenges remain. The expansion of tourist infrastructure, such as hotels and resorts, has encroached upon natural habitats, raising concerns about overdevelopment and environmental degradation. However, there are encouraging signs of progress, as sustainable tourism initiatives gain traction among both businesses and travelers.

As Mexico seeks to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, collaboration between government, businesses, and communities is crucial. “From large corporations to small businesses, there is growing recognition of the importance of sustainability in tourism. By embracing sustainable practices, Mexico can safeguard its natural and cultural heritage while continuing to thrive as a premier tourist destination,” underscored CONCANACO.
