Apple has reduced its global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 60% compared to 2015 levels, the company announced in its 2024 Environmental Progress Report. The milestone is a significant step toward Apple’s 2030 goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its entire business footprint within the next five years.

Apple aims to cut GHG emissions by 75% from its 2015 baseline before addressing remaining emissions through carbon credits. In 2023, efforts such as transitioning supply chains to renewable electricity and increasing recycled materials in products helped avoid an estimated 41Mt of GHG emissions.

“We are incredibly proud of the progress we are making toward Apple 2030, which touches every part of our business,” said Lisa Jackson, Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, Apple.

One of the company’s core strategies has been increasing renewable electricity use in its global supply chain, which now totals 17.8GW. In 2024, this avoided 21.8Mt of GHG emissions, representing a 17% year-over-year increase. Additionally, suppliers avoided nearly 2Mt through improved energy efficiency.

To further cut industrial emissions, Apple announced that 26 of its direct semiconductor suppliers and 100% of its display suppliers have committed to abating at least 90% of fluorinated GHGs from Apple-related production by 2030. In 2024, this initiative helped abate 8.4Mt of emissions.

The company also advanced its materials strategy, surpassing 99% usage of recycled rare earth elements in magnets and recycled cobalt in Apple-designed batteries. These two components make up the majority of Apple’s rare earth and cobalt use, respectively. Moreover, waste reduction remains a key focus. Through its Zero Waste program, Apple suppliers diverted approximately 600,000t of waste from landfills in 2024, raising the total redirected since 2015 to 3.6Mt.

Product design innovations contributed as well. The new MacBook Air includes over 55% recycled content, and Apple’s product portfolio now includes carbon-neutral options for Mac mini and Apple Watch. In water conservation, the company and its suppliers have saved over 90 billion gallons of freshwater since 2013. In 2024 alone, 14 billion gallons were saved through reuse and efficiency initiatives. The company also continues efforts to replenish 100% of freshwater withdrawals in water-stressed areas by 2030, with partnerships already covering 40% of the goal.
