A study by the World Economic Forum revealed that more than 75% of companies are looking to adopt emerging technologies like cloud computing, artificial intelligence and big data, to advance their digital transformation efforts. In response to this market signal, the Mexican Ministry of Economy has established a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop specialized IT talent, according to the Ministry’s press release.
This strategic collaboration involves the joint efforts of Mexico's Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Public Education, Ministry of Labor, and AWS. Through the “Empowering Mexican Talent in the Cloud” program, the Ministry of Economy aims to bridge the talent gap in Mexico, drive innovation forward, and attract foreign investors enticed by the country's nearshoring appeal. However, its primary objective is to enhance the technological skills of Mexican students, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and new female business entrepreneurs on social media.
Mexican talent has the potential to act as a catalyst for Mexican industrial policy, serving as “a significant asset in enabling nearshoring and fostering economic growth,” explained Raquel Buenrostro, Secretary of Economy. “Through this program, our objective is to ensure Mexico's sustained prominence as an investment destination, thanks to its abundant and highly skilled technological workforce, [] not only in quantity but also in quality and preparedness,” she added.
As the world becomes increasingly digital, people with specialized IT training and digital skills become an imperative necessity for businesses looking to remain competitive. To close the existing IT talent gap, AWS is set on empowering over 29 million people globally with the technical and digital skills needed for an emerging digital economy by 2025. Through its free cloud computing training program, students will be acquiring the skills that not only ensure well-paying jobs, but also fosters professional growth.
"The Empowering Mexican Talent in the Cloud curriculum will focus on providing fundamental cloud concepts to individuals with limited technological knowledge. [F]or participants with more technical backgrounds, we will concentrate on expanding our reach into more specific technological [concepts]," says Carolina Piña, Head of Enterprise Enablement, AWS LATAM. The program will also provide Mexican SMEs the technical support needed to effectively integrate cloud computing technologies into their operations.
The program is set to commence on the seventh of December, offering a hybrid format with both physical and virtual classes for interested participants. Moreover, the program is expected to diversify its curriculum during 2024 to cater to evolving industry needs.
“We want to contribute to the [development of] Mexican talent by empowering them with the … cloud computing skills for the rest of the century. These skills are increasingly fundamental for many jobs across multiple sectors that the Mexican government has identified as targets for increased investment,” said Shannon Kellogg, Vice President of Public Policy, AWS.
