Innovation, technology and digital transformation in food safety were the focus of the 6th International Food Safety Authorities Forum (IHFAF), which brought together representatives from food agencies around the world to strengthen national food control systems in response to global challenges.

Eve Crowley, Deputy Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, FAO, participated in the forum and emphasized the strategic role of international cooperation and equitable access to technology in advancing food systems that are safer and more sustainable. “The presence of all of you here demonstrates a strong and determined commitment to international cooperation, which is essential to collectively address the global challenges threatening food security, public health and sustainable development,” she noted.

Crowley noted that technologies such as blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and AI are transforming how food is produced, monitored and distributed. These tools, she said, support process optimization and enhance decision-making capabilities across the supply chain.

The representative cautioned, however, that access to these technologies must be equitable to ensure no country is left behind. “Technological progress can be a powerful driver toward more efficient, inclusive and resilient food systems. But for this to result in real and sustainable benefits, we must ensure these resources are accessible to all,” she added.

Crowley called for strengthening institutional capacities, developing appropriate regulatory frameworks and promoting global cooperation that enables knowledge-sharing, peer collaboration, and technology exchange among countries.

“Today, we have the opportunity to chart a shared path toward stronger, more dynamic and fair national food control systems. Let this gathering be a milestone in international technical cooperation and in building a safe and healthy future for all,” Crowley concluded.
