The State of Mexico’s Ministry of Water and the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo formalized a collaboration agreement to address the state's water challenges. The partnership seeks to apply scientific research, technological development, and training to mitigate drought effects and optimize water resource management.

The agreement aims to convert academic knowledge into tangible solutions that ensure water availability. This collaboration represents a results-oriented instrument with defined objectives and monitoring mechanisms, says the Ministry of Water.

It addresses the growing pressure on water resources in the State of Mexico, a situation aggravated by extreme weather events such as prolonged droughts. The challenges extend to the contamination of water bodies, inefficient resource use in both agriculture and urban areas, and the degradation of ecosystems that regulate the water cycle.

The agreement establishes specific action items. The university will contribute its infrastructure, specialized personnel, and technical capacity for R&D. The Ministry of Water will provide its territorial vision, institutional coordination, and community outreach to ensure that proposed solutions are implemented effectively and respond to local challenges.

The partnership will focus on three priority projects:

  • Hydro-Environmental Restoration: Efforts will concentrate on recovering basins in the eastern Valley of Mexico. These areas are vital for aquifer recharge and regional water regulation.

  • Agricultural Irrigation Optimization: The project will seek to increase water use efficiency in agriculture, a high-consumption sector, through technology transfer and producer training.

  • Aquifer Diagnostics: Technical studies will assess the condition and availability of groundwater sources, which allows for more sustainable, data-driven management.

This collaboration is expected to generate a direct and measurable impact on comprehensive water management. Applied scientific research will allow for the development of innovative solutions adapted to the state's specific challenges. In the long term, these actions are designed to strengthen the water resilience of the State of Mexico, ensuring that each intervention translates into tangible benefits for the health, productivity, and quality of life of its residents.
