The European Union is preparing to retaliate against the United States' newly imposed steel and aluminum tariffs, further heightening global trade tensions. This follows US President Donald Trump's executive order imposing 25% tariffs on these materials, which will take effect on March 4.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made it clear that the EU would adopt reciprocal measures in response. "I deeply regret the US decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum exports. Tariffs are taxes—detrimental to business and even more so to consumers. Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered; they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures. The EU will take decisive action to safeguard its economic interests and protect our workers, businesses, and consumers," von der Leyen stated.
According to Reuters, von der Leyen is scheduled to meet US Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday to discuss the matter. The EU underscores that trade between the United States and Europe is mutually advantageous, citing a €155.8 billion goods surplus for the EU and a €104 billion services surplus for the United States, reported Euro News.
In an interview with CNN, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that Europe should be seen as an ally, not an adversary, of the United States. "Is the European Union your primary concern? No, I do not believe so. Your primary challenge is China, and that is where your focus should lie," Macron said. "If you want Europe to contribute more to investment, security, and defense, and to prosper, which ultimately benefits the United States, you must refrain from undermining European economies with tariff threats."
During his first term, President Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, generating over US$1.4 billion in revenue within the first five months. Currently, Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico next month unless they take more action on drug trafficking and illegal immigration. In addition, Trump has implemented a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports. Following this announcement, China's Ministry of Finance responded by imposing additional tariffs on US imports. These measures include a 15% duty on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as a 10% tariff increase on US crude oil, agricultural equipment, and certain automobiles.
