Mexico aims to attract an increased number of tourists over the age of 50 with specialized travel and residential offerings, as the country taps into the growing “longevity economy.”

The Mexican Association of Tourism Developers (AMDETUR) and the Mexican Association of Retirement Assistance (AMAR) signed a collaboration agreement to develop vacation, residential, and retirement products and services, boosting investment in wellness, active retirement, and vacation property.

“Mexico has the potential to lead Latin America in developing tourism and residential products focused on the health and quality of life of the 50+ generation,” said Javier Govi, Founding President, AMAR. “We want to integrate tourism with longevity.”

The initiative targets retirees from Mexico, the United States, and Canada seeking active and purposeful lifestyles. Approximately two million foreign retirees currently live in Mexico, mostly from the United States. Top destinations include: Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, and Yucatan.

“Vacation property has become one of the preferred options for older adults, offering long-term stays with experiences tailored to their lifestyle,” said Daniel Linares, Executive Director, AMDETUR.

According to AMAR, North America has over 125 million people over 50, representing a major market for integrated experiences in wellness, health, and community. Mexico ranks second globally in vacation membership sales, with 75% of buyers coming from the United States and Canada, highlighting the country’s potential in this niche.

The collaboration seeks to consolidate “Retirement Assistance Tourism,” a model combining hospitality, wellness, and financial security, in line with global trends in active aging. Both associations aim to position Mexico as an international reference for senior tourism and retirement, leveraging the “Nearetiring” trend of retirees moving from developed countries to more accessible and warmer destinations like Mexico.

Govi emphasized that the focus is not only on travel but on creating meaningful and sustainable life experiences during retirement. The partnership reinforces Mexico’s leadership in regional tourism, wellness, and real estate investment, aligning offerings with the desires of a generation seeking to live longer, healthier, and more purposeful lives.
