Mexico City’s International Airport (AICM) is set to undergo a major renovation in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With a budget of MX$8 billion, the renovation aims to enhance the airport’s infrastructure and security.
According to the federal government, the entire investment will be self-financed through revenues generated by AICM’s administration, ensuring no federal funding is required. The renovation will involve 75 construction projects and the acquisition of 24 key pieces of equipment to modernize the airport. Work is set to commence between April and June 2025, with the project expected to be completed by May 2026.
Upgrades will include substantial improvements to terminals 1 and 2, with expanded waiting areas, as well as critical maintenance of runways and platforms. Three new taxiways will also be constructed to improve operational efficiency.
Along with AICM, airports in Toluca and Cuernavaca will also undergo improvements.
