The Brazilian government, through the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP), has announced a R$6 billion (US$1.09 billion) investment to establish Brazil as a major global player in the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) sector.

"We have countless opportunities, a tremendous potential to assist with decarbonization, create jobs, and strengthen Brazilian industry," said Geraldo Alckmin, Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce, and Services, Brazil.

The announcement was made with the participation of Aloizio Mercadante, President of BNDES; Luciana Santos, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation; and Alexandre Silveira, Minister of Mines and Energy.

Brazilian companies involved in fuel production or engaged in research, technological development, and innovation aimed at advancing SAF technologies are eligible to apply for funding. Additionally, businesses that commercialize the end products resulting from these technologies may also participate. Companies can apply individually or form consortia.

"The market is enormous, as 95% of cargo transport and all foreign trade are conducted by sea. Brazil is well-positioned to lead this agenda. We are already leaders in clean energy and can advance the transition to a green and sustainable economy in critical sectors," said the BNDES President.

Each proposal must include a single business plan and require a loan exceeding R$20,000 for its execution. Financial support may cover activities and expenses related to research, technological development, engineering projects, pilot plants (semi-industrial and industrial), working capital, acquisition of machinery and equipment, and other costs associated with project structuring.
