Correos de México has resumed air mail and parcel transport after a 15-year hiatus through a strategic alliance with the state-owned airline Mexicana. The inaugural route, connecting Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and Tijuana, aims to reduce delivery times by more than 50%, marking a significant milestone in modernizing the nation’s postal logistics infrastructure. The partnership was officially launched during a ceremony at the Postal Palace in Mexico City.

“Today, we demonstrate that two state institutions can unite to improve and transform the national logistics infrastructure with a deeply human, efficient, and inclusive approach,” said Violeta Abreu, General Director, Correos de México.

Abreu further emphasized that Correos de México is “giving wings to its social vision,” adding, “We will continue to be the institution that connects homes, families, and communities—now with the strength of a renewed logistics system and a state-run aerial infrastructure that takes us farther, faster, and with greater impact.”

The AIFA-Tijuana route represents the initial phase of a broader plan to upgrade national mail services through air transport. Correos de México estimates that the shift will reduce average delivery times between central and northern Mexico to approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes, a dramatic improvement over current land-based transport routes.

Tijuana alone accounts for an estimated 106 tons of postal material handled by Correos de México. With air cargo now part of the system, this material can be transported more efficiently. The organization plans to expand this model nationwide, with a particular focus on remote areas where delivery times have traditionally been longer.

“This collaboration is a clear example of what can be achieved when teamwork is placed at the service of the Mexican people. Our work will help optimize the resources of Correos de México, streamline deliveries, and benefit both businesses that trust our institutions and individuals who rely on us every day,” said General Leobardo Ávila, Director General, Mexicana.

The revival of air logistics align with the federal government’s Plan México, a national strategy spearheaded by President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. The initiative aims to boost internal markets, strengthen local supply chains, and enhance public service infrastructure. “Thanks to this agreement, we gain speed and restore an air service that, after 15 years, returns with the scale needed to reinforce a state vision and promote territorial equity,” Abreu stated.

Immediate Benefits of the Initiative:

  • Reactivation of the national postal air service after a 15-year hiatus.

  • Reduction of delivery times by over 50% between AIFA and Tijuana.

  • Enhanced operational efficiency and improved nationwide coverage.

  • Phased rollout prioritizing underserved and remote regions.
