Executive Aviation: A Journey of Challenges and Opportunities
STORY INLINE POST
Q: How was RedWings founded and how has it grown over the years?
A: RedWings is backed by my family’s experience in the aviation industry. I worked for my grandfather’s executive aviation company before opening a cargo line for DHL in Monterrey and Mexico and later establishing RedWings in 2007. RedWings started operations managing aircraft and later also bought a number of aircraft, focusing mainly on long-range aircraft management. We have a workshop certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration with 10 aircraft, an FBO in Queretaro and a parts distributor in the US. We also plan to open new branches in Mexico.
Q: What routes does RedWings cover?
A: We cover long-range flights, including trips to Asia, the EU, Africa and South America. Last year, we took safari tours to Africa and musical tours to South America; we also transported passengers to the EU. Our base in Queretaro serves as a maintenance, logistics and control center but 80% of our passengers depart from elsewhere. RedWings’ main alliance is with two large brokerage companies in the US, which make up 80% of our business. RedWings has successfully worked with them for eight years.
Q: What is the current demand outlook for executive flights and how has the market evolved?
A: The political and economic situation in Mexico has deteriorated, forcing us to look for new markets. Our advantages are being from a non-conflict country and our ability to fly over countries that US operators cannot, in addition to countries where language is a barrier for others. We have a good reputation in the US that is expanding to the rest of the world.
Q: How does RedWings prioritize passenger experience?
A: For RedWings, the experience starts when the passenger steps on the plane. We aim to create a magical experience and make the journey more enjoyable. Our air hosts are dedicated to serving customers and creating a positive experience. RedWings offers its clients an exclusive and luxury service through personalized and timely attention.
Q: What sets RedWings apart from its competitors?
A: Safety is considered intrinsic by passengers but operators and brokers must have certifications that set them apart. RedWings is the only operator in Mexico that can do a pre-flight check for crew, plane and company, which distinguishes us both locally and abroad and earns us respect.
In addition, we have security certificates such as Wyvern and Wingman. Wyvern is an independent company that ensures operators are applying best practices. At its highest level of rating, Wyvern offers the Wingman certification. When you fly with a Wyvern Wingman Operator, you know that you have chosen an operator who has gone the extra mile in safety and quality.
Q: What services are the most in-demand in Mexico?
A: The aviation industry in Mexico is facing a crisis in executive aviation, specifically for short-haul flights. There is an oversupply in the market for eight-passenger flights. However, the demand for regional aviation has great potential in Mexico. The market for regional flights is for distances of 200-300 miles, which can take seven or eight hours by land but only one hour by air. Currently there is a great need for connectivity between Queretaro, CDMX and Bajio by air. On this need we are focusing our efforts to provide an attractive option to our customers.
Queretaro is well-positioned to tap into this market but there is a lack of support from the authorities to make this a reality. Additionally, there is a shortage of airfields and runways in Mexico, and air traffic has become congested in the central part of the country.
Q: What are RedWings' plans and expectations for 2023?
A: RedWings' management is optimistic about expanding within Mexico. The plan is to develop tourism hotspots that cater to foreign tourists seeking unique, less crowded experiences. RedWings is also collaborating with an Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) company to provide innovative air transportation within metropolitan areas. The eVTOL market is expected to experience significant growth by 2030. In addition, RedWings aims to establish a larger presence in the North American, South American and European markets.
RedWings administers private airplanes in Mexico and worldwide. The company has an FBO at Queretaro International Airport.
