Guadalajara International Airport has officially opened its newly constructed second runway,  becoming the fourth airport in Mexico with dual runways. This addition is part of ongoing efforts to alleviate congestion and reduce wait times.

The first flight to use the new 3,538-meter-long and 45-meter-wide runway was operated by Volaris. The runway is dedicated to segregated operations, featuring separate tracks for arrivals and departures, as noted by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP).

GAP's investment in the airport from 2020 to 2024 amounted to MX$15.9 billion, funding extensive upgrades including the modernization of Terminal 1 and the construction of new aviation facilities.

“The inauguration of Guadalajara Airport’s second runway is a major milestone for our infrastructure, economic growth, and global connectivity,” said Raúl Revuelta Musalem, CEO, GAP. “It will enhance operational efficiency and flexibility, reinforcing our position as a key hub in global aviation.”

In addition to the new runway, A21 reported several other improvements: a revamped Terminal 1 facade, a pedestrian bridge, and a covered external corridor spanning approximately 26,400 square meters. General aviation facilities have also been expanded with a new 126,090-square-meter platform accommodating 83 aircraft positions, including four for helicopters, and 45 hangars, along with new facilities for governmental authorities.

The newly inaugurated Mixed-Use Building complex features a Hilton Garden Inn with 180 operational rooms, office buildings, a two-level commercial plaza, and bus parking. The terminal building has been expanded by 11,704 square meters, with an additional 1,188 square meters rehabilitated to further enhance capacity.

The airport’s parking capacity has increased significantly, with 4,000 spaces now available—representing a 90% increase over previous levels—and plans for over 10,000 spaces in the future.

Currently, Guadalajara Airport is Mexico's third busiest, with an average of 1,079 weekly departures and services to 60 destinations through 10 airlines. In 2023, it served nearly 18 million passengers.
