The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has introduced its Strategic Plan for 2026-2050, outlining a roadmap to ensure a secure, sustainable, and inclusive aviation system over the next 25 years.

The strategic plan sets three core objectives for the aviation sector by 2050: achieving zero fatalities from aviation accidents and acts of unlawful interference to enhance global aviation safety; reaching net-zero carbon emissions in international civil aviation by 2050, in line with global climate action efforts; and positioning aviation as a critical element of a connected, accessible, and affordable global transportation system, ensuring all countries equally benefit from its growth.

ICAO anticipates significant growth in global air traffic, with passenger numbers expected to rise from 4.6 billion in 2024 to 12.4 billion by 2050.

The plan places a strong emphasis on sustainability by addressing climate change, encouraging technological innovation, and developing aviation infrastructure. It advocates for advancements in sustainable aviation technologies, such as alternative fuels, and improvements in operational efficiency to reduce the sector's carbon footprint.

ICAO’s Strategic Plan will be reviewed every six years to ensure alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to address new challenges and opportunities within the sector.

The plan was developed in collaboration with ICAO’s member states under the leadership of Salvatore Sciacchitano, President, ICAO Council, and Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary General, ICAO.
